Modern Age Room
With the introduction of oil painting during and after the Meiji period, many young students of art began to experiment with modern Japanese-style methods of self-expression. These artists rediscovered "soy sauce art" and even established painting circles for the technique. Masters like Seiki Kuroda, Ryusei Kishida, Shigeru Aoki and Hanjiro Sakamoto tried their hands at soy sauce art as a "uniquely Japanese art medium”. Many of their soy sauce studies may still exist in the vaults of the University Art Museum.
